Despairing Loss Begs the Question, Will The Boks Bounce Back?

With Allister Coetzee’s impending albeit still rumoured axing on the horizon, Rugby fans are fascinated, intrigued, and to no less than a certain degree bewildered. What the ruck is going on in South Africa Rugby?

Forget the romantic “Invictus”-esque of Rugby bringing a nation together in an epic 1995 Rugby World Cup Final win.

Forget the seemingly endless names of Springbok Rugby legends that have time and again epitomized the spirit of Rugby tenacity and determination such as Francois Pienaar, Joost van der Westhuizen, Naas Botha, CJ van der Linde, Victor Matfield, Pieter Rossouw, Bryan Habana… (I will stop there but the list goes on).

Forget the sheer historical magnitude of SA Rugby reputation and prestige.

The Springboks have had two draws and three losses in their last five games. Shocking? Certainly! But last weekend’s 38-3 thrashing by Ireland was, to be sure, a bereavement to all Rugby fans who have seen the Boks go from bad to worse.

With a history like the Springboks have however, fair caution must be delivered to those who scoff at the thought of SA Rugby ever getting back in their zone.

Fans will have a plethora of theories of why things have gone so far south for the South Africans, from quota regulations, poor kicking execution, lack of direction from the usually resolute forward pack to a general lack of ambition and confidence as a TEAM. And ultimately, a combination of all those things plus the complexities and dynamics behind the scenes add to either the atmosphere of hope, drive and determination that we are used to seeing in the Boks, or whether the plummet has a long way yet to go.

What do you think?
